Power System Engineering and Construction
Kirby Power provides medium and high voltage engineering, construction, commissioning, operation and maintenance services to a diverse client base, including power utilities, heavy industry and the bio-pharma sector.
Engineering, Design and Commissioning services are provided by an experienced in-house team of professional engineers. Construction, Operation and Maintenance services are provided by experienced and highly trained Kirby Power electricians and technicians.

Our expertise – HV/MV System Engineering & Turnkey services
Kirby Power provides a full engineering turnkey service up to 110kV in accordance with ISO9001 including;
- Role of Project Supervisor Design Process and Construction Stage
- Overall Electrical Design including SLD & Protection Scheme
- Specification and Procurement of equipment
- Civil works design and management
- Co-ordination with Consultant, Client, ESBN, Eirgrid, Suppliers and Sub Contractors etc
- Detail Design and Studies including Short Circuit, Cable Sizing, Earthing(IEEE80) and Services
A detailed design is provided in advance of site construction including;
- Protection, Control & Metering interconnection drawings
- Cable Schedules and installation drawings
- Substation building and HV Switchyard equipment installation and layout drawings
- Method Statements and Risk Assessments
- Detailed Construction Programme and Outage Schedule
- Commissioning Plan and Procedures
On completion, a Project O&M Manual inclusive of project commissioning report, as-built drawings and equipment manuals is handed over as part of the Safety File.
Our expertise – HV/MV Construction, Maintenance and Operation
Wind Power Generation:
Kirby Power is actively involved in windfarm developments through the provision of Balance of Plant turnkey services to turbine manufacturers, construction companies, utilities and developers.
Our involvement in the wind farm sector as BOP turnkey contractor began in 2004 with the installation of 1 no. 850kW turbine in Dundalk Institute of Technology. Since then we have installed BOP services on some of the largest wind farm developments in Ireland with cumulative generation capacity in excess of 660MWe.
Power Transmission and Distribution Infrastructure:
Kirby Power is also an approved ESB Networks contractor and in recent years has constructed 20 no. 38kV/20kV substations both on green and brown field sites. Kirby Power have been awarded further framework contracts and work is on-going.
The scope typically includes civil works and in most cases involves work in close proximity to live in-service equipment. A full pre-commissioning and commissioning assist service is also provided.
We have invested heavily in training and engineering so that ESBN standards for Safety and Customer Supply are maintained.
Maintenance and Call-Out services:
Kirby Power currently provides an MV/HV Maintenance and 24-hour Call-Out service to various windfarm clients.
In-house resources:
All work is undertaken by qualified and experienced personnel using task specific plant and equipment.
Our site supervisors are trained to ESBN PICW level standard and operations technicians are fully trained in HV switching and testing.
Our MV and HV cable jointing teams are certified by leading manufacturers and approved to work on utility networks up to 110kV equivalent.
Our design and commissioning engineers are qualified to degree level and have extensive experience in the power industry.
